A Day In My Life: Time Management

We always hear the phrase “sleep is a waste of time”.  But what do people that use the phrase actually mean?  Are they effectively managing their time awake or wasting it?  This topic came up during conversation with a friend of mine, Debi, so thank you for the idea Debi.  She mentioned it and said how much can be done if we don’t sleep.  Of course I’m paraphrasing here but you get the idea.  I countered with sleep is tooooooo important to miss out on and time management is key.  I love sleep, IYKYK...  Also, I can’t function too well and give my all without sleep.  Personally, I only need 5-6hrs per night.  Sometimes more, sometimes I’m ok with less.  Everyone is different, to each their own.  With that said, here is a look at my everyday life.  **some days and results may vary**

0515: Wake up

Once up, I’m making my preworkout drink, usually just BCAA w/caffeine.  I immediately start to work on my photography business, Devo Fields Photography.  That work will be anything from editing photos, drafting blogs, posting photos online, or working on my website (coming really soon).  I do this until 0615-0630.

0615-0630: PT

During these COVID times I have the luxury of doing PT on my own.  So after doing an hour or so of personal work, I head out to the gym to get a decent 45-60min workout in.  I’m back home by 0745, plenty of time to get ready for work.

0800: Double Time

Why double time?  Because I’m moving fast as fuck to eat breakfast while making a smoothie and then rushing to shower and get to work.   Yes, that was a run-on sentence, just like that part of my morning is a run-on. Lol

0900-1630: Work

Work as in my main career.  Active duty military.  Not much to say there.   Meetings, troops, equipment, etc, etc.  Lunch break somewhere around 1130/1200 where I also work on personal business stuff.  (currently writing this blog while sitting in my car on my lunch break).

1730-2000: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructor

At this point I transition over to my off-duty employment.  My second job.  I teach kids BJJ from 1730-1830 and then I teach adult no-gi BJJ from 1830-2000.  I usually leave the gym around 2030-2100 after helping to clean up.

2115/2130-sleep:

This is where I get a lot done in a small window.  Home from the gym, all of my gear goes into the washer and me into the shower immediately.  Out of the shower and into the kitchen.   I’m pretty good at having dinner prepared but if not, I cook.  While either cooking or eating, I’m back on my laptop working on photography stuff.  Whats that?  Laundry is done?  Hang or throw everything in the dryer.  Back on the laptop.  Around 2300 I start prepping for the next day.  Clothes/gear packed, meals packed, gym clothes laid out for the morning workout.  All of this is accomplished while brewing my nightly tea.  Finally, I lie in bed and sip my tea while either reading a book, watching videos to learn something or editing/posting photos.  Tea is finished, teeth are brushed....crash until the next morning when the cycle starts all over again.

Just about every moment of my day is taken up.  I have very little “down time” but with effective time management I’m able to accomplish a lot WHILE still enjoying my sleep.....I LOVE sleep.
